Statement of Solidarity Regarding the Attack on Nermin Sharif
As DAD-DER (Marine Employees’ Solidarity Association), we condemn the attempted attack on Nermin Sharif, President of the General Federation of Libyan Workers and a key representative of the struggle for trade union rights, as well as the violence she has endured.
This attack is not only directed at Nermin Sharif herself but also constitutes a clear assault on the labor movement and the freedom of association. Such attempts are unacceptable attacks aimed at intimidating human rights defenders.
Trade union activities are fundamental rights guaranteed by national and international law. The attack on Nermin Sharif constitutes a violation of these rights and serves as a dangerous example of the increasing pressure targeting female trade unionists in particular.
As DAD-DER, we believe that the struggle for workers’ rights—particularly for maritime workers—must be conducted in a safe environment. Threatening or subjecting those who defend workers’ rights to violence is absolutely unacceptable.
In this regard, as DAD-DER:
- We demand an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation into the attack against Nermin Sharif,
- We demand that those responsible be held accountable,
- We demand that the safety of all individuals engaged in union activities be ensured,
- We demand an end to all forms of pressure, threats, and violence against workers, and especially against women union representatives.
We express our full solidarity with Nermin Sharif; we commend her determination and courage in defending workers’ rights. We strongly emphasize that she is not alone in this process.
